DU Eng(H) test might be scrapped

Last Updated 18 April 2013, 21:29 IST

Delhi University is considering scrapping the entrance exam for English (Honours) course which is conducted by around 20 colleges.

Senior DU officials said discussions are on with the English department faculty to scrap combined aptitude test for English (CATE) in order to make the admission process easy under the new four-year graduation format.

The university has given this suggestion to colleges so that admissions are given on merit this year, an official said.

In the new graduation structure, some papers of English (H) will be taught in discipline 2 (minor), the official said, adding that the decision on scrapping the entrance exam is yet to be finalised.

An English teacher from a south campus college said the entrance exam helped in keeping the cut-offs low for one of the most sought-after courses of DU.

“The varsity is infamous for high cut-offs. CATE used to help in keeping the cut-offs low by calculating their class 12 and entrance test marks. The entrance was an aptitude test, not a literature test. A lot of English teachers are unhappy with the way the curriculum is being structured,” he said.

The step might benefit hundreds of students.
