<p>A woman and her four-year-old daughter drowned in a water-filled quarry pit at Betta Ulsoor in Chikkajala police limits on Monday. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Police identified the victims as Kavitha, 26, and Sangeetha, 4, both residents of Betta Ulsoor. Kavitha was married to Ramesh, 30, a labourer. The couple hailed from Chikkaballapur, but came to Betta Ulsoor three years ago and worked as labourers. <br /><br />According to police, local residents used the quarry to wash their clothes. Police estimate that the pit, which contains a large quantity of water, is nearly 50 feet deep. <br /><br />Kavitha, Sangeetha and a relative Archita, 7, went to the pit at around 3 pm to wash clothes. Sangeetha, who was playing near the pit, lost her balance and fell into the water. Kavitha, who saw the child crying for help, also entered the water to save her. By this time Sangeetha had drowned. <br /><br />Kavitha, who also did not know swimming, drowned soon after, said the police.<br /><br />A grief-struck Architha ran to Ramesh and told him what had happened. Ramesh rushed to the quarry. He jumped into the water to search for his wife and daughter, but failed. Several local residents finally pulled Ramesh, who was struggling to breathe, out of the quarry, police said. <br /><br />Kavitha’s body was recovered by local swimmers and personnel from the fire department.
