Amidst the brisk publicity campaigns and flood of promises by political parties, Election Commission too is trying to educate public about voting, but in a quite different way this time!

The Commission has now chosen Nandini Milk packets as the messenger. Milk packets produced by The Kolar-Chikkaballapur District Co-operative Milk Producers Union Ltd (Komul) now bear the poll awareness slogan, ‘Cast your votes’!

This poll season, through Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (Sveep) the Election Commission is trying to create awareness about polls using different media.

As a result, now Nandini milk packets reaches awareness slogan to every house, every day.  The Commission believes that this would educate all the customers who use Nandini milk.

50 lakh ‘messengers’

Komul has started printing poll awareness slogans on milk packets from April 26.

Speaking to Deccan Herald CEO of Komul, Hanumesh says, “The packet will bear the awareness slogan till May 5, the election day.

As Komul produces 5 lakh packets per day we are hoping to create awareness among 50 lakh customers by then. It is really nice to notice Nandini, the household name for milk in Karnataka is creating poll awareness in a subtle way. This is of course a great awareness campaign.”

Hanumesh added that Komul would have printed the slogan in Kannada as well if it had more time.

Customer view point

Customers too, seems happy about this awareness drive. Resident of Housing Board Colony and teacher Narayanappa says , “women would certainly notice this slogan when they cut the milk packet, this would of course create awareness among women voters.”

He also observes the deteriorating trend of voting and calls it a grave issue. “But the timely and creative awareness campaigns would encourage public to cast the votes,” he said.
