Man stabs mother-in-law 25 times over family row

He also attacked her relative who rushed to her aid

A middle-aged homemaker was brutally stabbed to death in front of her relative’s house Tuesday morning by her eldest son-in-law over a family dispute.

The victim has been identified as Shanthamma, 40, a resident of Sanjay Nagar slum at Kasturba Nagar in the Byatarayanapura police limits. The suspect, Lokesh, is employed as a clerk with the helicopter wing of HAL. He and his mother Mahadevamma fled after the murder, triggering a search operation by the police.

Shanthamma’s husband is employed at a private insurance company. According to the police, Lokesh stabbed Shanthamma more than 25 times. He also stabbed a relative Savithramma who rushed to Shanthamma’s aid.

Shanthamma sustained massive internal injuries and heavy bleeding. She died before she could reach the hospital.

Hospitalised

“Savithramma is being treated as an in-patient at a private hospital and is reportedly out of danger,” police said.

The incident occurred after Shanthamma went to meet her relative Ramachandraiah, 70, and his wife Savithramma.

Ramachandraiah had gone to a provision store while Savithramma and Shanthamma sat outside their house talking to each other at around 11.30 am.

“I returned home after sometime, which seemed to coincide with the arrival of Lokesh and Mahadevamma on a bike,” Ramachandraiah told the police. “Lokesh was furious to see Shanthamma near my house and objected to her visit.”

Ramachandraiah also told police that Lokesh despised Shanthamma as he held her responsible for the separation of his brother, Girish, from the family. “He took out a knife and stabbed her wherever he could,” Ramachandraiah told Deccan Herald. “I could not intervene as I was stunned by the attack. Lokesh also stabbed my wife when she rushed to help Shanthamma.”

According to Ramachandraiah, Lokesh then collected his knife and fled with his mother on the bike. Girish is employed with a private company. A postgraduate in Kannada, he had worked as a teacher and had married Shanthamma’s daughter Jamuna three years ago. The couple have a two-and-half-year-old daughter.

Police said Mahadevamma, Girish, Jamuna, Lokesh and his wife and their son lived together at Ittamadu. The relationship between Girish and Jamuna soured after the birth of their daughter. Girish was angry that Jamuna had not given birth to a boy. Unable to bear his abuses, Jamuna went to live with her mother.

She later returned after Girish moved to the family’s home in Chamarajpet. Their move, six months ago, convinced Mahadevamma and Lokesh that Shanthamma had engineered the separation by using her daughter.

Conspiracy?

Members of the family told the police that family elders had arranged a reconciliation meeting for both families at Ramachandraiah’s house on Tuesday. The murder took place after Shanthamma walked out of the house. Lokesh followed her out and stabbed her, police said.

“It seems to be a well-hatched conspiracy which was properly executed,” an investigating officer said. “A team has been constituted to search for Lokesh and Mahadevamma.”
