A woman in her early 20s lost her life after an anaesthetist, who doubled up as a surgeon, performed a caesarean operation in the absence of his gynaecologist wife at their private clinic. The incident took place at Kishanganj in eastern Bihar, more than 400 kilometres from the State Capital.

According to the police, a woman identified as Prerna Devi, 23, was admitted to a private nursing home after she developed labour pains. But since the gynaecologist Dr Kanchan Lata was away, her husband, Vijay Kumar, an anaesthetist, performed caesarean operation upon her at their nursing home located on Dharmshala road.
No sooner she gave birth to a male baby than her condition started deteriorating. Alarmed over the faux pas, Vijay suggested that the patient Prerna should be shifted to a hospital in Siliguri in North Bengal, which was barely two hours drive from there. The young woman, however, passed away on reaching Siliguri.

“After coming out of the operation theatre, Vijay said Prerna’s condition was very critical and we should rush her to Siliguri,” said Amit Kumar Saha, husband of Prerna, alleging that Vijay conducted a wrong operation in the absence of his gynaecologist wife Dr Kanchan Lata leading to her death.

Amit’s brother Kamal Kumar Saha later lodged an FIR in Kishanganj against the doctor couple, who have since then fled the spot. As soon as the news of death of the woman spread like wild fire, a rampaging mob gheraoed the nursing home and damaged its window panes.

They also blocked the National Highway 31, linking Bihar with Bengal, for several hours demanding immediate arrest of the doctor couple.
