Tragedy struck a family in UP’s Sitapur town, some 90 km from Lucknow, when a ‘self kidnapping’ stunt by a youth of the family went awry — he was killed by his friends as they feared being caught by police.

According to reports, Shubham, son of a marble trader in the town, hatched a plot for his own kidnapping with the help of his three friends in a bid to extract a hefty ransom from his family.

According to the plan, Shubham was kidnapped by his three friends at gunpoint on Thursday night while he was returning home after closing his shop. He was then taken to Lucknow.

Some time later, his friends called up the family and demanded Rs 30 lakh for releasing the youth.

According to police, Shubham and his three friends were staying in a hotel in the state capital. Video footage of the hotel showed Shubham laughing with his alleged kidnappers, police said.

Police had put the cellphones of his friends on surveillance, and had traced the location of the four youth.

A police team also raided the hotel on Friday to nab them, but they had already checked out.

Police later nabbed the three friends while they were on their way to Sitapur after killing Shubham.

During interrogation, they said they feared being caught as the special task force team was actively tracking them, and so they killed him.

They dumped the body in a field near Kamalapur locality in the district, which was recovered by police later.

They told police that it was Shubham who hatched the conspiracy to get himself kidnapped as he wanted money. They said Shubham lived lavishly and was always short of money.
