'Dead' man returns home after 7 years

A man, who was assumed dead seven years ago by his parents, appeared at Totagaon in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

“Twenty-five-year-old Jaga Pahan, who returned home in Khallikote on Wednesday, was produced before a local court and handed over to his parents,” Sisir Mishra, inspector-in-charge of Khallikote police station, said.

Last year, a police team had gone to Bihar and Jharkhand to trace him, he said. His parents were overwhelmed as they met their son after seven years.

“We are very happy following his return. We had no idea about his whereabouts. There was no news from Jaga, who had been to Bihar for work, for the last seven years,” Abila Pahan, father of Jaga, said.

Jaga along with some men of his village had gone to Muzaffarpur in Bihar through a contractor to work at a construction site in 2006.

He, however, did not return though his other companions came back after a few months.

The contractor also failed to give satisfactory reply.

“Since then I complained to the police. We had lost all hopes as the police failed to trace him. We had even performed the last rites,” Abila Pahan said.

Two persons of the village, however, saw Jaga when he was moving near the village and they brought him to the house, he said. Jaga said he was engaged in sugarcane crushing in some places in Bihar before he reached here.
