Most of the rain-caused deaths were due to lightning strikes or electrocution, with Villipuram district accounting for three casualties, sources said. One death each has been reported from other districts like Madurai, Tirunelveli, Tiruchirappalli, Virdhunagar, Cuddalore, Perambalur and Tiruvarur.

A farmer in Tiruvarur district was electrocuted when he was trying to tie his cow to a pole, even as in Perambalur district, a woman was struck dead by lightning.

Even as coastal Nagapattinam recorded a maximum of 18 cm rainfall for the 24 hours ending 0830 hours on Thursday, Chennai city continues to be lashed by the Monsoon rains. Weather men have predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in most places of all coastal districts of the state in the next 48 hours.
