Two men, including a national level boxer, have been arrested for their involvement in Monday’s carjacking in outer Delhi’s Rohini. The main accused was killed in a shootout after hot-pursuit, while a Delhi Police constable was also shot at.

Police have also identified the deceased criminal as Amit Dahiya, a resident of Prashant Vihar. “We had information that his close associates belonging to Pooth Khurd were absconding from their house,” said Ravindra Yadav, additional commissioner of police (crime and railways).

Based on information, possible hideouts were raided in south-west Delhi’s Palam and Gurgaon during the intervening night of Tuesday-Wednesday. It led to the arrest of cousins Aman and Sumit Dahiya from Hotel Primero in Gurgaon.

“Both the accused are pursuing graduation and Sumit is a national level boxer. They have national level and prominent Olympian sportsmen in their family,” Yadav added.

During interrogation, it was found that Aman and Sumit were active associates of Amit.

They told police that they were impressed by Amit’s lifestyle and wanted to imitate him. “On Monday, they were roaming in Rohini in a Volkswagen Polo car when they decided to get a bigger car,” the police officer said.

They then hijacked a Ford Endeavour car at gunpoint near Sachdeva Public School in Rohini sector-13. When they were moving towards Bawana, two constables started chasing them.

They ran out of luck when the car hit a sidewall on a narrow road in Sannoth village and came to a halt. “Both the constables then surrounded the vehicle and challenged them,” the officer added.

As the constables tried to take the accused out of the vehicle, a scuffle ensued in which the carjackers opened fire on the police personnel. Amit received gunshot wounds during the encounter.

Later on, Aman and Sumit assisted the co-accused to escape and themselves planned to escape to Rajasthan. Amit was rushed to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
