Nothing is enough when it comes to accessories for a woman! Earrings, bangles, neckpieces, anklets, rings – the options are endless. But nowadays the accessory that is fast catching up with other ornate pieces is the kamarbandh or tagdi as it is popularly known. Earlier a preserve of the newly-wed bride, this traditional piece of jewellery had disappeared for a while but is now making a comeback among young girls while remaining a favourite of the dulhan-to-be.

As part of her wedding attire, a bride should not miss out on this graceful ornament. It is undoubtedly one of the most unique and different jewellery pieces adorned by Indian women.

This exquisite piece is worn around the waist and rests delicately on the lower torso. An intricately designed kamarbandh looks gorgeous on slim women and enhances her curves. It looks fabulous when worn with low-waist sarees or even below waistline tops. The elegant kamarbandhs are usually made in stones like ruby, kundan or even swarovski set in pure gold or silver – depending on one’s personal preference.

Sumit Sawhne of Apala, says, “It has become a style statement to flaunt the perfect waistline with a kamarbandh nowadays. It is also one of the more important bridal accessories. But girls can wear less heavy pieces. Nowadays, a broad kamarbandh with multiple chains is in fashion.”

“Girls with a broader waistline should wear it on the fabric whereas, slimmer ones can definitely wear it on their skin as well as on the fabric. Sonam Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty have really made the kamarbandh popular among the masses,” adds Sumit.

Though kamarbandh is ideally worn with traditional clothes, it can also do wonders with ethnic tops and western dresses. Many Bollywood actresses like Asin and Kareena Kapoor have flaunted the kamarbandh.

Another designer and owner of HSSK jewellery, Sanjeev Bansal, says, “Traditional jewellery is coming back and kamarbandh is definitely one of them. People are going back to antiques with a modern touch. Though girls do not prefer heavy pieces, sleek ones are fast disappearing off the shelves. The film Jodhaa Akbar highlighted this fashion big time and girls are loving this piece of jewellery.”
