An official of the education department in UP’s Siddharth Nagar district was made to return the money he had allegedly taken as bribe for the posting of a teacher at the district Samajwadi Party office.

The education official was let off with a warning not to take bribe for doing work that had been recommended by SP leaders. No complaint was lodged against the official.

The bizarre incident happened on Tuesday at the SP office in the district soon after a meeting of SP leaders to condole the death of party leader Mohan Singh.

According to reports, a primary teacher, who had been transferred to Siddharth Nagar from Ballia, was running from pillar to post to get himself posted to a school in the district without success.

The teacher met the district SP chief Ajay Chaudhary a few days ago and narrated his plight, following which the latter spoke to a senior education department official and asked him to put the teacher in a school.

The official, however, demanded Rs 15,000 from the teacher to get the favour done, which the teacher paid.

He, however, reached the SP office on Tuesday after coming to know that Chaudhary would be there at the condolence meeting.

He narrated the incident to him, after which the official was summoned to the office and was forced to return the money.

“He was let off with a stern warning not to repeat it in future,” said a local SP leader. “How dare he take bribe from someone whose case has been recommended by a ruling party leader,” he said.

He did not reply when asked why the matter was not reported to higher officials and no complaint was lodged against the official.
