Close on the heels of a successful operation in Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh, to nab two terrorists, the Tamil Nadu government has proposed to give fast promotion to police personnel who have performed acts of extraordinary bravery and valour in achieving operational success.

Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi said: “The government is of the considered view that police personnel who have performed acts of extraordinary bravery and courage when engaged in their efforts to apprehend and deal with hardcore criminals, terrorists and other anti-social elements should be suitably recognised.”

Accordingly, a high-level committee headed by the chief secretary has been formed for considering cases that merit accelerated promotion.

“The committee will submit its recommendations to the government for issuing suitable orders. The committee will meet as and when the necessity arises,” Mardi said.

Recently, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha announced a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh and promotion to the members of the Special Investigation Division team, which nabbed three extremists wanted in several important cases, including involvement in the murder of BJP state secretary Auditor Ramesh.
