'Serial rapist killer not medically fit to be interrogated'

A court here on Friday refused to remand serial rapist and killer M Jaishanker (36) in police custody as of now, saying that he is not medically fit.

The 9th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Shivananda, ruled that Jaishanker be given further treatment at the Victoria Hospital. He could be remanded in police custody after he became fully fit, the judge said.

Jaishanker — who had escaped from a high-security cell of the Central Prison in the early hours of September 1, 2013, before being caught five days later — now talks and listens properly.

He, however, cannot walk or do other mundane chores. Hence, the court refused to remand him in police custody, the police explained.

The Parappana Agrahara police, who had sought Jaishanker’s police custody, said he would continue to be in judicial custody and receive treatment at the hospital.

Meantime, authorities at the Central Prison said Jaishanker would be brought back to the jail after further treatment. He will be treated at the Victoria Hospital as the healthcare centre in the prison lacks facilities to treat the ailments he is suffering from. The prison department will bear all his medical expenses.

High-level security has been provided at the ward in the hospital where he is being treated at present. He is under the custody of the City Armed Reserve (CAR) police.

The prison department has identified a high security cell in the Central Prison where he would be lodged once he is brought back. The prison top brass has reiterated that Jaishanker would never be sent to prisons in Mysore, Bellary or Belgaum.

Jaishanker faces trial in more than 20 cases, including murder and rape. On September 1, he jumped from a 30-foot prison wall. He was caught on September 6 at Kudlu Gate, just a few kilometres from the prison.

He was later remanded in judicial custody by a court.
