While Children’s Day was celebrated in different ways across the country, it was an appropriate time to take cognisance of the fact that there are millions of less fortunate kids who are robbed of their childhood and the security of a loving home and parents, the birthright of every child.

BIG 92.7 FM decided to dedicate the day to a special programme that involved well-known Sandalwood actress Priyanka Upendra and her two kids hosting a radio show along with street children from New Hope Children’s Home in the City. Also hosting shows through the day were children from all walks of life, some of them singers like Pannagashree (finalist of little start singer), Aniruddha Ramesh, a Hindustani vocalist. Besides these, children present were Rohan, a seven-year-old marathon runner and Druthi, winner of a general knowledge competition at the age of two.

The whole purpose of the event was to sensitise children and adults to the harsh reality that street children have to face in their daily lives.  Priyanka played the role of the show host helping the kids interact with each other, express their feelings and describe their experiences on air. She later shared a few light moments cutting a cake and spending some bonding time with them.

“Most often than not street children grow up in an environment of cruelty and abuse – physical, mental and sexual. If he or she does not have the wits or courage to escape, they emerge hardened criminals from these experiences with total contempt for society in all its aspects when they are legally adults. That is why we have dedicated this day to street children who have been rescued and will speak out against this situation that still affects millions of children in urban centres in the country,” said Sunil Kumaran, Station Director.
