The family of a woman who died of postnatal complications on Sunday afternoon, lodged a complaint with JP Nagar police alleging medical negligence by doctors at Cradle Hospital, Jayanagar.

Vedavathi, 26, a resident of Bangalore South was admitted to the hospital for delivery on October 16. However, she developed postnatal complications in the form of respiratory problems. After she complained of breathlessness, she was taken to Apollo Hospital off Bannerghatta Road.

By the time she was moved to Apollo she was brain dead, family members claimed. Hospital sources, however, disputed this by claiming that she had suffered cardiac arrest at 12 midnight after which she was moved from the hospital.

Vedavathi was apparently put on a ventilator at Apollo Hospital and treated for the past week. She died on Sunday afternoon. “Vedavathi complained of breathlessness by 9.30 pm after which her oxygen saturation levels were checked and they were normal,” a source in Apollo Hospital explained. She was later nebulised after her condition worsened, the source added.

Officials in Apollo Hospital said the patient had a history of pregnancy-induced hypertension and hypothyroidism which might have worsened the complication.
In his complaint, Vedavathi’s husband Keshavamurthy alleged that doctors at Cradle Hospital were responsible for postnatal complications that his wife developed. He has demanded that the medical procedures given to his wife be investigated.

JP Nagar police have registered a case of death due to negligence and are investigating the case. DCP (South) H S Revanna said police would gather all medical records relevant to the case and submit them to the medical board.
