Accountant kidnapped by 'Tagged' friend, accomplices

A Punjab-based chartered accountant was kidnapped after he came to the capital on Tuesday to meet a 19-year-old girl whom he met on social networking website Tagged.

The girl took him to her rented house in south east Delhi, where two of her accomplices - both foreign nationals - took his photographs in objectionable positions and threatened to upload them on the Internet.

Arun, who is from Punjab’s Ludhiana district, was confined in the house and Rs 4 lakh ransom demanded for his safe release. A raid by police on the house on Wednesday led to Arun’s rescue and the arrest of Monica Nayak Rajput, Nigerian Anyanwu Chinwendu and James William of Sierra Leone. “Monica came in contact with Anyanuwu through Facebook, and they were in a live-in relationship,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ranvir Singh.

Probe revealed that Monica had a profile on Tagged and invited friends to her rented house in Chittaranjan Park. At the house, the trio took photographs of victims in objectionable positions and extorted money.

“Investigation was launched after Arun’s 19-year-old son Nikhil reported the kidnapping for ransom on Wednesday,” Singh added. Nikhil told police that his father came to Delhi on Tuesday, but he was informed about the kidnapping by a friend’s father on Wednesday. A case of kidnapping for ransom was registered on Nikhil’s statement, at Janakpuri police station.

During the course of investigation, it was revealed that Arun came to Delhi by train. “The accused were in constant touch with Arun’s family members and even managed to have Rs 4 lakh transferred to a bank account,” Singh said. A police team conducted raids at several places but in vain. On Wednesday, they managed to contact Arun on his mobile phone and a raid was conducted at his instance in Chittaranjan Park. “Monica, Anyanwu and James were arrested from the house,” Singh added.

Arun told police that he was offered a lift by Monica and was taken to the house in Chittaranjan Park. In a while, Anyanwu and James entered the house and started taking his photographs. He was threatened that the photographs would be uploaded on Tagged. Arun was forced to ask his family to transfer money to the trio.
Monica, who hails from Haryana’s Faridabad district, had strained relations with her family and had left home to live in Delhi. She initially worked in an ayurvedic clinic in west Delhi’s Nangloi and subsequently came in contact with Anyanuwu through Facebook.
