The audience took a walk down the memory lane at Gaata Rahe Mera Dil, a musical programme held at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall recently. While the orchestra entertained the audience with a variety of classics, music lovers even shook a leg to some of the peppy numbers.

A plethora of songs, featuring superstars and actors like Shammi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhi Gulzar, Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna, was performed at the event. What made the show exciting was that the talented set of musicians sang the numbers almost like the original ones.

The evening kickstarted with the popular numbers sung by Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh among others. Hit songs like Badan Pe Sitare Lapete Hue and Yeh Chand Sa Roshan Chehra and many other songs from movies such as Kashmir Ki Kali set the mood for the evening. The group performed many songs composed by legendary music composers like SD Burman, OP Nayyar, RD Burman etc.

The songs from Amitabh Bachchan’s films were rendered in the second half of the show, which included Tere Mere Milan Ki Raina. The audience applauded and sang along with the singers and many felt that it was a refreshing break from the item numbers.

“We are so used to hearing the item numbers and bad music that the old songs sound great. This is one of the reasons why I attended the show. We are missing the old melodies and these shows give us an excellent opportunity to hear them again,” said Hitesh Jain, who was there with his family.

Many others felt that the team handpicked a select group of songs that is not only popular but melodious and entertaining. Junaid Pasha, who enjoyed the show with his family, said that he goes for all musical shows where old melodies are sung. “The new songs that we hear today are no match for the classics that were composed in the 60s and 70s.

These classics have a different charm and everyone enjoys them. Nowadays, I know many youngsters who love listening to RD Burman’s songs. The show brings back memories of my college days, when I bunked college to watch these movies. The songs have made me very nostalgic,” he noted.
