Finally, the city police are close to realising their dream of availing cornucopia of provision at discounted price. Police Canteen modelled after Army Canteen is coming up at the training centre in City Armed Reserve (CAR) police grounds in the city.

Starting from January 18, the police canteen will be catering to 3,000 odd police force from commissioner in the top to constables in the lower rung, who will be benefitted along with their counterparts in Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) force in Bangalore. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will simultaneously dedicate the canteens in Bangalore and Mysore, during the annual police sports meet in the State capital. Police Commissioner M A Saleem claimed that the veritable facility in the city will also be the first among the cities in the State, with the Bangalore canteen catering to out-station forces in the surrounding districts.

The commissioner said, in Mysore, police personnel attached to city stations, CAR and mounted forces will be eligible for the benefit. Earlier it was planned to open the canteen at a community hall of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) at Jyothi Nagar. When the civic body refused to part with it, CAR grounds emerged as the ideal location.

Facility

Unlike others, the sentinels will get the articles sans tax, reaping the benefit of savings up to 25 per cent per product. However, the maximum purchase per month is fixed at Rs 5,000. To avoid chaos and confusion, swipe cards bearing the photographs of the couples and the singles in case of individuals will be distributed. It comes handy at times when men (as police personnel are addressed in general) will be on duty, and the wives can use the card. Photographs of the couples/ singles have been already collected with a private company entrusted with the task of designing the card.

Added benefit

It is added benefit for the policemen in lower cadres from constable to assistant sub-inspector, who are already eligible for free ration benefit.
