A woman from Parkala near Manipal has fallen prey to subterfuge on social media, with her pictures in a compromising position being splashed on Facebook.

Her lover, 22-year-old Mohammed Yaseer from Katpady, was arrested on Thursday by the Manipal police for allegedly uploading the photographs. It came close on the heels of the arrest of eight persons for kidnapping and blackmailing two medical students and forcing them to have sex, on the outskirts of Mangalore.

Yaseer is believed to have visited Dubai recently in search of a job, but returned empty-handed. He befriended the woman – a first year BCom student in a private college here – on a social networking site, before meeting her. The girl trusted Yaseer allowed herself to be photographed with him.

She filed a complaint with the Manipal police on Thursday, stating that Yaseer and his friend, a woman from Dubai, threatened to upload the photos on Facebook.

The girl’s parents met SP M B Boralingaiah, who arrested Yaseer and produced him before a judge in Udupi late on Thursday. Yaseer was remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.

The SP said Yaseer admitted to have taken the photographs, but denied uploading them on Facebook. He reportedly said his girlfriend in Dubai had hacked into his Facebook account and uploaded the photos.

Yaseer has been booked under Section 66 (E) of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act. A technical committee of the cyber wing has been directed to remove the photographs from Facebook. “As the girl in Dubai is the second accused in the case, she will also face action. We are trying to contact the embassy,” the SP said.
