JD(S) stage stir against inflation

Members of the district unit of the JD(S) staged a protest demonstration against the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, alleging that its unscientific policies have led to the rise in price of essential commodities, here, on Monday.

The protestors, led by former minister M Shivanna, took out a procession from Sri Chamarajeshwara Temple to the Deputy Commissioner’s office via the Double Road. They shouted slogans against the Union government.

They said, despite ruling the country for nearly 10 years, during two consecutive terms, the UPA has failed to contain inflation, resulting in price rise. “People are suffering due to continuous rise in price of food items, domestic LPG cylinders, diesel, petrol, etc. The process of privatisation of water resources has begun.

The poor and middle class people will suffer due to this unscientific policy. Corruption has become rampant in all walks of life, including implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), which was meant to help economically backward rural people. All these aspects will affect the unity and integrity of the nation, adversely,” they said.

They urged the government to stop privatisation of water. “Steps should be taken to continue water supply projects under government agencies,” they said.

“Huge machines are being used to execute works under NREGA, instead of making use of manpower. Government officials and contractors are making money, as usual, while poor people are still migrating to towns and cities in search of work,” they pointed out.

District president of JD(S) J Shivamurthy, C M Krishnamurthy, S Mahesh Gowda and others were present.
