The forthcoming parliamentary elections may see at least 1.27 crore young voters exercising their newly obtained right to take part in the nationwide democratic exercise.

“Around 3.91 crore new electors have been added in the recent summary revision of the electoral roll during the last three months, of which 1.27 crore voters are those in the category of 18-19 years age group,” said the Director General of the Election Commission of India, Akshay Raut. He, however, said that the number of new voters might go up when the final roll for the parliamentary polls is prepared.

While 71.69 crore people were eligible to vote during the last parliamentary poll in 2009, approximately 10 crore more people will be entitled to take part in this year’s general elections.
