Last Updated 28 January 2014, 20:39 IST

Several people from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community held a candlelight vigil at the Queen Victoria statue near Cubbon Park on Tuesday evening to protest the Supreme Court’s decision to not review its verdict declaring gay sex illegal.

Manohar, Joint Secretary, Praja Rajakiya Vedike, said: “We had never expected this from the Supreme Court and we are left with the only option of sending a curative petition to the apex court and also appeal to Parliament to repeal the verdict.”

The future seems bleak and dangerous for the LGBT community, but we will fight for our rights and make sure people from the LGBT community live a life of their own, he said.
Maria Gomez, a lesbian, said, “People do not know what we go through in our daily lives; they should put themselves in our shoes and look at the situation. Only then will they understand our struggle.”

‘Wide support’

Speaking on the support the protesters received from people belonging to different walks of life, Komal said, “We are garnering support not only from the LGBT people, but also from various NGOs, activists and writers. The struggle will be intensified till we get our rights.”

The community plans to stage another protest in the City on Wednesday.
