Not only students but their parents also suffer from examination fever. Parents, now, are going to psychiatrists to deal with the increasing pressure as board examinations are beginning on March 1.

Shubham Gupta, appearing for class 12 exams said, this is a crucial time for him as two weeks are left for the exam. “I am studying for six to eight hours a day,” said the 17-year-old DPS Vasant Kunj student.

“I got less time to cover the syllabus as I was busy participating in competitions. Now I can’t think of wasting even a minute,” added the student. His favourite subject is Mathematics.

His mother, Sanjogta Gupta said they are not imposing any form of pressure on him. “We are also stressed out due to the boards. It’s not only his exams but ours too as we have to make sure he doesn’t get disturbed,” she added.

Sometimes parents have to be tough. “We didn’t allow him to go to the auto expo as he would have end up wasting time. Rather he can stay at home and relax,” added the homemaker.

Another student Shivani Sazwal said that the pressure is building up. “It’s really hard preparing for boards. One has to mug up the maximum syllabus,” the teenager said, who is studying for 8 to 9 hours per day. She said her mother also gets tensed at times.

Sameer Kalani, a child psychiatrist said parents have been approaching to know the techniques to relax their kids. “Sleep disturbance before exams is the common phenomenon. Many parents come to us saying that their children can’t sleep properly,” Kalani said. “We avoid prescribing medicines.”

Psychiatrists recommend the Jacobson Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique. “It’s an internationally followed technique which says one has to relax his body to relax his mind. We teach students and even their parents how to do it,” added Kalani.

Kalani speaks about a student who is undergoing treatment and having trouble in revising the memorised stuff. “He has developed an anxiety. When he begins reading a chapter, he thinks he has to do a lot of other chapters which breaks his concentration and he is not able to revise anything,” he added.

Psychiatrists said one must take out time daily to relax body and mind, which will help in enhancing their grasping power.k0
