Dempo ride on Alwyn, Haroon heroics

Last Updated 15 February 2014, 16:37 IST

Goals from Alwyn George (7th minute) and Haroon Amiri (44th) gave Dempo a comfortable 2-0 victory over visitors Rangdajied in an I-League encounter here at the Tilak Stadium on Saturday.

The win lifts Dempo to fifth place in the league table with 19 points from 16 games. Rangdajied remain rooted at the bottom of the table with 12 points from the same number of games.

Former champions Dempo, who have been an indifferent League campaign, strengthened their team with the signings of Amiri and Tolgay Ozbey and the move paid dividends as the former netted on his league debut for the Goan side.

But it was George who opened the scoring from a tap in following a Clifford Miranda shot which rebounded off the post. Amiri, the Afghanisthan captain, then doubled the lead after the Rangdajied defence failed to clear from a corner.

United SC sign Nigerian

Reeling under financial crisis without a title sponsor, United SC on Saturday announced the signing of Nigerian forward Adekunle Owolabi Waheed in place of high profile Ranty Martins who is set to join bottom-rung Rangdajied United.
