“When asked about Indian sports women, most people don’t go beyond Sania and Saina. The truth is there are so many women out there who have achieved tremendous success in their chosen field. They can inspire a whole new generation of young women to follow in their footsteps if given the right exposure. I am elated by the response from the fraternity which has come forward to support the cause. Sportz Divas will not just be a platform to highlight achievements but will also guide and train budding sports women into tomorrow’s World Champions,” said Anuradha Namashivaya, the founder of Sportz Divas.
Talking about the calendar she added, “The desktop calendars will be an ideal 2010 New Year gifts for corporates, schools and colleges. The proceeds from them will be utilised for the organisation’s activities towards upliftment for women.”
The calendar was unveiled in the presence of S J Amalan, Regional Director of Apprenticeship Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, and women sports achievers from very diverse fields. These included Karnam Malleswari, Dola Banerjee, Mary-Kom, Alisha Abdulla, Nisha Millet, Reeth Abraham and Chitra Magimairaj. “Hopefully this initiative will draw attention to the achievements of these amazing women many of whom have conquered odds stacked against them and persevered to become champions,” said Nisha Millet.
The 2010 Calendar carries world champions as well as lesser known sports women of India. Some of the personalities featured include PT Usha, Anjali Bhagat (shooter), Anju Bobby George (athlete), Karnam Malleswari (weight lifter) and Dipika Pallikal (squash player).
“We will donate a part of the revenue generated to P T Usha Foundation and Shikshana Foundation, which encourage young talented girl students from 200 rural schools to excel in sports,” added Anuradha.
