The classical music lovers were in for a treat as Swaranjali by Saniya Kulkarni Patankar, held at the Bangalore International Centre, provided them with an excellent ambience to unwind and relax.

Saniya was accompanied by Vinay Kulkarni on the tabla, Surya Upadhyay on the harmonium and the vocal support was lent by Sugandha.

The session commenced with an elaborate vilambhit in raga marwa and was followed by tappa. She concluded the programme with a Kannada bhajan.

The packed hall was mesmerised with her beautiful voice but what set the mood of the evening was the way she used the vocal support to add variety to the show and made it more interesting.

In the audience, one could see a mix of all age groups and many youngsters took an active interest in classical music.

The cool weather added to the ambience and the audience enjoyed the programme applauding the artistes for their efforts.

The high points of the programme were the beautiful alaap and taan rendered by Saniya and the tappa, which became very popular with the people who attended the show.

While some felt that the singer was extremely talented, others were of the view that she had a great voice, which would work in classical and semi-classical songs.
Abhinav, who attended the programme, was floored by the singer and said that he would like to hear some light songs rendered by her.

“Now that I have heard her sing classical songs, I would also want to hear some good semi-classical numbers, for instance ghazals or bhajans,” he said.

“She was very spontaneous and many times, she innovated on the spot. There is a lot to learn from senior singers like her. I have started training in classical music and I am trying to attend more such concerts so that I can learn and imbibe their style and make use of these when I perform in future.

I am looking forward to attending more such programmes,” said Nishtha, a young member of the
audience.
