Navy's coastal security awareness campaign in Chennai on Dec 3

Last Updated 01 December 2009, 10:16 IST

The Coastal Security Awareness Campaign has already covered other coastal towns in the state like Nagapattinam, Mahabalipuram and the neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry and would be held in Porayar on December 2 and Chennai on December 3, a Defence press release said today.
The campaign with the slogan "Help us to protect you" was aimed at improving the awareness among the fishermen of the Tamil Nadu coast, the release said.
Six teams of Naval personnel would visit coastal villages and make presentation to fishermen on security aspects and action expected from them in case of witnessing any suspicious act along the coast and report them to officials concerned.
"The presentation also highlights the role of Indian Navy in the changed coastal security scenario post 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks," the release added.
Security agencies, including the state police, have stepped up security along the 1076 km long coastline in Tamil Nadu in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, acknowledging the fact that fishermen are their first line of information.
The multi-agency Operation Baricade, a massive security excercise a few months back in the state, had been designed on this line.
