Hurdles delay PGET counselling

Last Updated 04 March 2014, 17:49 IST

Students who have written the postgraduate entrance test (PGET) for Medical and Dental courses may have to wait a while longer for the seat counselling to begin.

On the one hand, the private colleges have not signed the consensual agreement with the government yet, on the other, the results of nearly 2,000 students have been withheld pending decision on their domicile status.

Among the top 10 rank holders in the PG Dental stream, the results of only one candidate has been announced, while those of the others, including the candidate with the highest score, have been withheld.

Earlier, it was decided to conduct the counselling from March 5, but the results were handed over to the KEA only on March 3. On Tuesday, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which will conduct online counselling for the Karnataka share of seats for postgraduate courses, uploaded the results on its website. However, the dates of the counselling are yet to be announced. The KEA has stated on its website that the dates would be announced in due course.

Results have been withheld due to a pending Supreme Court decision on the students’ domicile status. Since a majority of them from outside Karnataka were competing for the State seats in the government quota, the State government decided to (last year) redefine the domicile status. Accordingly, for students to claim PG seats in Karnataka, they should have lived in the State for at least 10 years. Earlier, it was five years.

Some students approached the apex court challenging the decision. The court directed the government to allow them to write the examination, while the decision on the matter is pending.

The government has now withheld the results until the decision, according to officials in the Medical Education Department. The next hearing is scheduled for March 14.In the Medical stream, Akshata Huddar has topped the list, scoring 685.52 out of 800, while Sapna Nayak stands second with a score of 680.84.
