Mayor B S Satyanarayana is planning to take the legal route, if his term is not extended till September this year. He may approach the High Court if “injustice is meted out to him”.

Palike Commissioner M Lakshminarayana had written to the State government, seeking directions to hold the election to the post of Mayor, as the tenure of Satyanarayana is ending this month. A copy was marked to Satyanarayana also.

The Mayor wrote to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Urban Development Department to extend his tenure till September, as mandated by the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act.

He said that the election to the post of Mayor was supposed to be held last year in April, but was deferred till September, due to the “indecision over the reservation to the post of Mayor”.

Last year, when the term of the then Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy was supposed to end, those demanding reservation of the post for the OBCs approached the High Court, against reserving the post for general category. The HC verdict came only in September, making it clear that the post should be reserved for the general category.

Subsequently, the election took place and Satyanarayana became the Mayor. It was then said that his tenure would be for only seven months, from October to April. Now, the Mayor does not want to give up his post and desires to continue till September.
