Fresh voters' list likely after polls

Last Updated 25 April 2014, 19:39 IST

Expressing surprise over the large number of missing names in the voters’ list across the country, the Election Commission on Friday said the matter would be studied and a fresh enumeration of the list will be conducted soon after the results of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls are declared.

“I apologise firstly that such a large number of our Indian voters were unable to cast their votes,” Election Commissioner H S Brahma told reporters here. Admitting to lapses in the election procedure, he said the commission will find out how they happened.

“I have not seen this kind of a massive operational mistake. I can’t understand how so many names can be missing,” he said, adding, “This unauthorised deletion happened due to lack of supervision on the ground. I think it could have happened at the ground level due to lack of co-ordination. This is a lapse on our part; we should acknowledge and rectify our mistake.”
