Forty Nine personnel of Nand Nagri Police Station of North East Delhi has been transferred to the third battalion of the force for allegedly giving a free hand to betting syndicates and other illegal activities in their area, police said today.

"We wanted to set an example that dereliction in duty will not be tolerated. 49 policemen of different ranks posted at Nand Nagri Police station have been transferred to the third battalion after a vigilance inquiry was initiated against them following complaints received from the public," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Eastern Range) Sanjay Beniwal.

Betting was rampant in that area and so where some other illegal activities. The complaints in this regard were received long ago after which an inquiry was initiated, police said.

"The decision to transfer them was taken one and a half months ago but it was not immediately imposed because of the impending elections. The decision was finally implemented today," said Beniwal.

This is the second such action in less than one week by Delhi Police top brass.

On Tuesday, Station House Officer (SHO) of Mandawali police station was sent to the district police lines for allegedly patronizing gamblers involved in betting racket. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Madhu Vihar was also transferred in this connection.
