Veg it up for a radiant skin

Wellbeing

Everybody desires a supple, radiant and clear skin. But the summer sun and the spiralling mercury levels can spoil your skin.

So, how to ensure skin protection during summers and escape the skin blues?

Here’s how:

* Drink two glasses of natural fruit or vegetable juice daily.

* Have generous servings of fruits and salad daily.

Loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, these foods not only retain the glow on your skin but also neutralise the free radicals and prevent the damage caused by them.

Colour for care

Beta-carotene and other carotenoids like lutein and lycopene, which are abundant in yellow, red and green fruits and vegetables, help to diminish skin sensitivity to the sun. Carotenoids reduce the negative effects of UVB radiation and protect against UV-induced collagen breakdown, thereby preventing wrinkles and premature ageing.

Cutting sugar

However, juices and fruits like mango, pineapple and banana are abundant in fruit sugars and can raise the level of glucose and triglycerides in the blood.  Therefore, people with diabetes,  obesity, or high triglyceride levels, should limit their intake of certain fruits. They can instead savour vegetable salads and juices as they are naturally low in sugar and calories.
