Last Updated 13 December 2009, 19:00 IST

Police said George (70) was strangled to death by unidentified men who attempted to break into a house in M C Layout near Vijayanagar.

The incident is said to have occurred late on Saturday night when George spotted some miscreants breaking into the home of Prakash Chandra Shetty, a civil contractor. In the scuffle that followed, he managed to prevent the break-in but tragically lost his life. George’s body was found at 7:30 am on Sunday morning by passers-by, who immediately informed the police. The police said that there were no visible injuries except for a scar around his neck, which indicated death by strangulation.

Good samaritan

George had been employed by the Shetty family for over 10 years and was guarding the house while the family was away. The family had been out of town for over a week on account of a relative’s wedding. Neighbours called George a good samaritan who was always at hand for all sorts of help.

The Shettys had reportedly told George time and again that he was too old for the job, but he had insisted on staying on.
