Farmers oppose power plant at Kudagi

Thousands of farmers staged a massive protest against the thermal power plant at Kudagi, near Telagi Cross in the district, on Monday.

The protesters, who had assembled under the banner of various organisations, alleged that the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), which is setting up the power plant, had not come up with any “scientific evidence” over the harmlessness of the proposed power station.

They said that the NTPC was going ahead with the work though the matter had been pending before the Green Bench of the Supreme Court and without paying compensation to the farmers who have parted with their land for the project.

‘Health problem’

“People residing in the 30-km radius of the power plant will face severe health problems due to the power plant. In addition, it will lead to environment pollution also. The project has been shifted to Kudagi following severe opposition from the people of Tadadi in Uttara Kannada district, where it was earlier proposed to be set up,” they said. The public representatives have become mute spectators to the atrocities on farmers leading to suspicion, the protesters added.
