Even as there is vehement opposition to the proposed modern abattoir at R S Naidu Nagar, in the city, a private party has moved court, claiming the ownership of the site identified for the project.

Fayaz, a local resident, has filed a petition in the court, here, claiming the ownership of two acres of land, forcing the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) officials to scout for the documents. It has come as a shocker to the MCC that was already facing opposition from several quarters — especially the BJP and several like-minded organisations. Unfazed, the MCC officials are preparing for a legal recourse with adequate documents.

It’s not for the first time that the local body is finding itself on a sticky wicket over the project. Earlier, in the year 2004, when attempts were made to go ahead with the plans, many organisations had categorically voiced against it.

However, attempts were made again to revive the project in the name of modern abattoir at an estimated cost of Rs 40 crore. It has the capacity to slaughter 1,700 cattle in a systematic manner.

The contentious issue here, is the huge quantity of solid waste that will be generated, if the abattoir starts operation. Residents of Kesare, Rajendra Nagar, R S Naidu Nagar and other localities in the vicinity fret over the solid waste that may cause tepid smell, triggering health hazards.

When contacted, MCC Commissioner P G Ramesh said, he was aware of the issue and the matter will be placed before the next council meeting.
