Police seize Shivalinga; 3 held in Udupi

Based on a tip off, DCIB PI Ganesh Hegde and his staff arrested three persons who were transporting an ancient Shivalinga in a car from Hebri towards Brahmavar without any permit for sale. The police intercepted the car at Heranje cross at Chantaru village and arrested the trio.

The value of the Shivalinga is yet to be assessed depending upon the quality.

The Archeological department will be consulted to evaluate the price and historic significance of the Shivalinga. The arrested are Ashoka (51) from Malpe, Ramakrishna Hedge (35) from Honnavar and Ramachandra (50) from Harikhandige of Udupi taluk, he added.

Crime in district

Pawar informed that property worth Rs 3. 64 crore have been stolen in the district till November 30. About Rs 1.99 crore property was recovered and about Rs 1.81 crore property have been returned to the complainants.

About 142 persons have been arrested in property offences and about 3072 accused were arrested related to all other cases in the district up to Nov 30.

Pro-public programmes

Elaborating on the public centric initiatives taken in the district, Pawar informed hoarding have been erected to create an awareness on chain snatching and news related to the prevention of crimes were published in newspapers and local channels, he said.
