An 18-year-old girl and her younger brother were found dead under mysterious circumstances at their house in east Delhi’s Karawal Nagar on Thursday.

The girl was nude with her hands and legs tied with a rope. The police suspect that she may have been raped before being murdered. After initial post-mortem, the police said there were multiple stab wounds on their bodies and it appears as if the assailants also tried to strangulate them with pillows.

According to police, the exact motive behind the killings was not known. The police, however, suspect love or property angle behind the incident. The identities of the victims have been withheld since the initial probe points to sexual assault on the girl before murder.

“It is suspected that the killer entered the room through an open door at the rear which usually kept open as a room cooler was placed there. As the cooler was on, rest of the family did not hear the victims’ screams,” said a police officer. The girl’s mobile phone was missing and the room was partially ransacked.

The incident came to light at around 6:30 am when the victims’ aunt went to their room and found them dead. The victims stayed on the first floor of a house owned by their aunt, who lived on the ground floor with her family. The victims’ father worked for a private courier company in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh and he was out on night duty when his children were murdered. The mother and elder brother of the victims are in their native village in Bihar’s Saran district.

On Wednesday night, the brother-sister duo was sleeping in their room while their sister-in-law slept with her family in an adjacent room. In the morning, the sister-in-law called out to her mother-in-law to open the door of her room as it was bolted from outside.
