Official sources said nearly 45 platoons of armed forces had already been deployed in different parts of the district. All churches and prayer houses have been provided with police protection.

Police have also conducted flag marches in sensitive pockets. Vehicles entering the district are being thoroughly checked.

Meanwhile, appearance of Maoists’ posters in some areas has triggered fear among villagers.

However, a state home department spokesperson claimed that adequate measures had been taken to counter any kind of law and order violation.

Kandhamal had witnessed unprecedented Hindu-Christian communal riots which had resulted in large scale destruction of houses and properties including churches and prayer houses. Nearly 40 people were killed in the riots. There were also clashes between people belonging to both the communities during the Christmas celebrations in 2007.
