Sangwan makes progress

Sumit Sangwan out-punched Levi 11-0 and will now take on Turkey’s Burak Aksim, who defeated Hungary’s Gabor Breznai 6-5 in a thrilling contest, in the pre-quarterfinals.
It was smooth sailing for the rest of the Indians as they got byes and are now into the pre-quarters.

In pinweight (46kg), Sandeep will take on Lithuania’s Kestutis Pukas on Monday. Gaurav Bhiduri will square off against Freddie Ortiz of Puerto Rico in the pre-quarterfinal bout of the light flyweight (48kg) division.

Namit Bahadur will be up against Israel’s Viktor Barak in the flyweight (50kg) category, while Shiva Thapa (52kg), who registered a dominating first-round win on Saturday, will take on Ukraine’s Yuriy Shestak in his last-16 bout. A day later, Vikas Khatri will take the ring against Poland’s Przemyslaw Runowski in the bantamweight pre-quarters. Belarussian Andrei Mikhailau awaits Kuldeep (57kg) in the featherweight pre-quarters.

Beijing Olympics quarterfinalist and World Cup bronze medallist Akhil Kumar’s protege Mandeep Jangra will make his international debut against Lithuania’s Ricardas Kuncaitis in the lightweight pre-quarters after he too got a first-round bye.
