There seems to be a marginal improvement in the flood situation in the lower Assam districts and the water level has also receded in the worst-hit areas of Goalpara and Kamrup districts.

The death toll in the state has gone up to 33 with over eight lakh people badly affected.

Five trains scheduled for Thursday were cancelled and seven others diverted due to prevailing floods in Lower Assam and track restoration work.

The North-East Frontier Railway in a statement said here that rail tracks have been breached at 16 places in the New Bongaigaon-Goalpara-Kamakhya section of Rangiya division due to massive floods in the last few days.

Track restoration work is going on between Aujuri- Sonuabari in Lumding division.

The spokesperson added that NFR has cancelled the 55805/55804 New Bongaigaon-Guwahati-New Bongaigaon passenger, 05818 Dhubri-Alipurduar special, 55608 Silghat Town-Guwahati passenger, 55604 Mairabari-Guwahati passenger, while the 55611 Fakiragram-Kamakhya passenger has been partially cancelled between New Bongaigaon and Kamakhya. He also mentioned that seven other trains scheduled for Friday have been diverted.

To facilitate travel for flood hit people and to dispatch relief materials, the North East Frontier Railway has decided to run two special trains from Thursday till September 30 between New Bongaigaon-Goalpara and Guwahati to Chayygaon.

The state administration has set up 88 temporary relief camps in Goalpara and 54 in Kamrup districts, where over 1.25 lakh people are presently taking shelter. However, road communications between Guwahati and Goalpara remain cut off.
