Love for animals motivated this topper

Correia Salisha, always a topper right from school, has now bagged an astounding 15 gold medals, topping her undergraduate studies at Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Universities (KVFSU), Bidar.

The university held its convocation ceremony on Saturday.

Salisha hails from Mumbai and she had a number of other academic options to pursue, like medical or engineering. But even as a child, she had made up her mind to study veterinary sciences. Many suggested that she consider studying law, as she was a formidable debater and elocutionist. She, however, was not easily swayed. “I always had this great love for animals and to nurse them to health and I decided early on that I would pursue my passion,” said Salisha.

Her parents have always been supportive of all her endeavours. “They never forced me to do anything that I did not like,” she said.

As a student of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology at KVFSU, Salisha is an all-rounder in the true sense of the term. She not only excelled in academics, but also in sports. Her active participation in sports has earned her a few of the 15 medals. “I participated in table tennis, shot put and basketball at the inter-agricultural level and did very well,” Salisha said.

Now, a postgraduate student at the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, Salisha ultimately wants to put her learning into practice immediately to better the lives of animals and is not considering the comfort and stability of a government job.

“There is a huge demand for vets in the government and many of them go to this sector. However, I want to do something different and start practising immediately. I will concretise my plan once I am done with my Master’s,” she said.
