Two Delhi Police constables were assaulted by some persons who were drinking and gambling at a public park in west Delhi’s Uttam Nagar on Sunday.

Both the policemen were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where they were discharged after treatment. They had suffered injuries to their heads and faces.
Police said five suspects, including a juvenile, have been held.

“A call was made for more reinforcements on which some senior officers arrived at the spot and apprehended the assaulters. They were drunk at the time of the incident,” a police officer told Deccan Herald.

Around 7.30 pm, constables Mandeep, 29, and Satendra, 39, had received information about some persons drinking and gambling at a park in Nawada.

They reached there and began questioning them.

Suddenly, the accused, about six to eight in number, began pelting stones on the policemen in a bid to get away. Some even allegedly rained blows on the policemen’s heads with sticks.

One of the constables was able to inform the local police station and help arrived soon.
The officer said the accused were in such an inebriated state that most of them were not able to escape despite having the policemen on the backfoot for a brief while.

A search is on for any other suspect who might have escaped from the spot. The officer said most of those arrested work odd jobs such as cleaning vehicles or working as security guards.

This assault is the latest in a spate of attacks on policemen in Delhi.

Four policemen have already laid down their lives in the line of duty this year with the latest assault being reported just a week ago.

A couple of days prior to that, some alleged drug peddlers had fired at policemen in the busy Connaught Place area.
