A depression over the Bay of Bengal triggered heavy rain across Tamil Nadu, throwing normal life out of gear in the state.

The weatherman predicted the rain to continue for the next 48 hours even as major reservoirs in the state were overflowing.  "Yesterday’s (Tuesday) well-marked low pressure area over South-West bay moved in the westerly direction and now is approaching Tamil Nadu,” said a senior met official on Wednesday. “This system might turn into a deep depression during the next 24 hours. Under its influence heavy rain will occur over entire Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 48 hours,” he said.

This is the fourth depression to affect the state in the last three weeks since the north-east monsoon became active.

Fishermen were warned against venturing into the sea. The rough sea had kept fishermen off the sail in coastal Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Cuddalore, Ramanathapuram and Chennai since Tuesday.

Heavy rain that continued to lash southern Tamil Nadu since the formation of the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal on Monday hit normal life in several places.  Schools and colleges remained closed in many districts due to heavy floods.

Chennai was also hit by heavy rain and thundershowers affecting normal life in the city.
