Last Updated 20 November 2014, 06:29 IST

A fire today broke out in the Uri-II power project in Baramulla district of north Kashmir but no one has been injured in the incident so far, an official said here.

"The fire broke out in Uri-II power project early this morning. Fire tenders from Uri and Baramulla district headquarter have been pressed into service to put out the blaze," Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Farooq Ahmad Lone told PTI.

Lone said there were no reports of anyone getting hurt in the incident. An official of the NHPC, which operates the 240 Megawatt power project, said all the employees were safe.

"The apparent cause of the fire is malfunction of a transformer. However, what went wrong exactly can be said only after the fire is put out and investigations carried out," he added.

Police officials said the smoke was billowing from the underground power project and attempts by personnel of the fire and emergency services department to enter the premises have not succeeded so far.

"There is too much smoke coming out from the project premises. Attempts to enter there have not succeeded so far," the official said. The Uri-II power project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 4.
