MCCI for separate transport ministry

Last Updated 24 November 2014, 19:34 IST

A separate ministry for logistics integrating ports, inland waterways, roads, aviation and railways will help in developing transport and shipping sector to contribute at least 2 per cent to the country’s GDP, the Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) said on Monday.

The industry chamber, in its presentation to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, also suggested that the creation of a one umbrella ministry for all transport related sectors will help in addressing inter-ministerial rivalries and delay in execution of infrastructure projects.

It also suggested the construction of a big port on the east and west coasts for sustained operations of mega vessels. In order to handle traffic from large ships and other vessels, big ports are required, MCCI said. For speedy evacuation of cargo from the port, there should be port expressways and railway connections to port.

If there is synergy in all the transport related ministries, it will not only help develop infrastructure projects, but will also increase economic activities in the concerned regions, said the presentation.
