Actor's mother attempts suicide at DC's office

The mother of a small-time Kannada actor tried to set herself ablaze just outside the office of the deputy commissioner here on Friday, alleging that her son had been wrongly arrested for chain-snatching.

The woman, identified as Vanishri, 46, from Rajendra Nagar locality in the city, carried petrol in a bottle and tried to immolate herself. But the alert police personnel reined in her in the nick of time. Police said the woman had come to meet the Deputy Commissioner, C Shikha, around noon.

She later told the police that her son, Pruthvi, 23, who has acted in a yet-to-be-released Kannada film, ‘Dress Code’, was wrongly arrested on Thursday for chain-snatching. Three others were also arrested in that case. A local court remanded him in judicial custody on Friday.

Police have booked Vanishri for attempt to suicide. They arrested her but released later. Interestingly, all kinds of protests are prohibited within a 100-metre radius of the deputy commissioner’s officer.
