Farmers begin hunger strike in jail

More than 75 farmers were arrested for staging a protest in Davangere, recently. Reopening of Bhadra Sugar factory and halting land acquisition for layout formation were their major demands.

Three farmers were released on bail on Saturday evening. The rest have now resorted to hunger strike seeking fulfilment of their demands.

Majority of the farmers on fast are aged above 50 years and suffering from various medical conditions like diabetes, blood pressure and heart diseases. A few of them who are on medication have stopped taking medicines in view of the hunger strike. The state government has maintained a stoic silence so far.
