Sabotage at Bhabha Atomic Centre ruled out

“We do not see anything suggesting involvement of external hands,” DAE secretary Srikumar Banerjee said here on Sunday.

Banerjee, however, admitted that the ongoing probe is yet to come out with any explanation on how the accident happened. “It is a basic research laboratory with no inflammable chemicals like gas cylinders or hydrogen,” he said. The laboratory was recently renovated and handed over to the scientists on the same day the accident occurred.

“We are analysing the chemical inventory and looking into the possibility of vapour accumulation leading to the explosion. The problem is that since everything is charred, it is difficult to find any clue,” said Banerjee who is also the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.  The accident happened in the last week of December killing two young BARC scientists Umang Singh and Partha Bag.
