Coen Brothers take city by storm

Film Festival
Last Updated 16 December 2014, 14:46 IST

Film buffs in the city were treated to a bouquet of films by  Brothers Joel David Coen and Ethan Jesse recently.

The film festival dedicated to the duo screened their best films, namely, Raising Arizona (1987), Barton Fink (1991), Fargo (1996),
The Big Lebowski (1998), No Country for Old Men (2007) and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).

Though the event, at the American Centre, was not graced by the presence of the talented duo, but the mere name attracted people from different walks of life. Such was the enthusiasm that people, who are familiar with the works of the Academy Award winners, did not mind standing in the long queue to enter Most of the films that were screened had been watched before by cinema buffs not once but atleast three times.

An enthusiast, Abhinov Raina speaking to Metrolife said, “Watching these films at home on your laptop is fine but it feels great to watch them in the theatre on a big screen. I guess a good film is about good sound and effects, and that cannot be witnessed at home.”

Raina is a photographer who claims to be a fan of the film A Serious Man, which is well known and was nominated for the Academy Awards but unfortunately was not screened at the festival.

Virtual reality exploded at the American Centre auditorium, when No Country for Old
Men hit the screen. The film has garnered four Academy Awards and several others across the globe.

The Coens’ film-making style is present throughout. An offbeat Americana based on the book by Cormac McCarthy which had violence and heightened drama. But the film at the same time, captured the horror that is felt every time one watches it.

Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh is still recognised in the film industry as one of the best serial killers (hitman) ever created.

Anuj Adlaka the filmmaker of Koti Ke Superstars says, “I love Inside Llewyn Davis as it reflects a no-compromise attitude of the filmmakers. The character is crude and stories depict purpose and thus seem very real.”

None of the shows went unwatched. Coen Brothers are not known for creating Hollywood-style films but have still emerged as a duo to reckon with in the film world.
