UP hooch toll touches 32, 200 still in hospitals

The death toll in the Uttar Pradesh ‘kachhi’ (locally made) liquor consumption incident has touched 32, amidst reports that nearly 200 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in the state capital.

Doctors say the condition of 12 of them remain critical, while sources said a dozen more have lost their vision. Official sources here confirmed only 29 deaths.

The state government swung into action, suspending 21 officials including a joint commissioner, a sub-divisional officer, two district excise officers, one excise inspector and a circle officer for dereliction of duty.

UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said on Tuesday that the guilty officials would not be spared. “A probe has already been ordered and we will act against more officials after the report is received,” Akhilesh said.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also said that the government must “fix responsibility” and act tough against the culprits.

All the victims hailing from different villages in Lucknow and Unnao districts had consumed the ‘kachhi' liquor on Sunday night. They complained of vomiting, nausea and loss of vision after a couple of hours.

One of the main accused identified as Jugnu has been arrested, the police said adding that five people had been booked in connection with the incident.
